Tom Hull's Home Page

Hi! Welcome to my web page. I finished my Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Rhode Island in 1997. My dissertation was on list coloring bipartite graphs, but now I mostly study the mathematics of origami (paper folding).

I'm currently an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at Western New England College in Springfield, MA.

I updated my Job Interview Advice page, in case anyone is interested.

For the Fall 2009 semester I am teaching
MATH 235-01 Calculus III, MWF 1:00-1:50pm
MATH 375-01 Creative Problem Solving, MWF 11:00-11:50am
MAMT 550 Discrete Mathematics, MW 5:30-7:20pm
I'm also advising an independent study and a senior project. You know who you are!

Please Email me if you have any questions about these courses!
Book news: My recent book is Project Origami: activities for exploring mathematics. (AK Peters website, cover, TOC) I'm currently working on another book, but it's going slowly...

Talk news: I'll be presenting a talk titled You Gotta Know How to Fold 'Em at the Joint Meetings of the AMS/MAA, Jan. 5-8, 2009 in Washington, DC. It'll be part of the MAA Session on Mathematics of Games and Puzzles. My talk will be on Tuesday, Jan 6. at 4pm, the last one in the session. (But the whole session looks like it'll be good!)

I'm also giving two invited talks in the coming Spring.
  • I'll be giving a talk as part of the symposium "Mathematics of Origami: From the Joys of Recreation to the Frontiers of Research" which will be part of the AAAS Annual Meeting, February 12-16, 2009 in Chicago, IL. (The origami-math symposium will be on Saturday, Feb. 14.)
  • I'm one of the invited speakers for the Spring 2009 Meeting of the Allegheny Mountain Section of the MAA. This takes place April 3-4, 2009 at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV. I'll be running a local Project NExT workshop on April 3 and giving my invited talk on April 4.

There are a lot of things on this site. As it's grown they've gotten all inter-mingled and some of the links go in circles. Below is a list of the main things here, but feel free to explore!
