Required texts:

Michael J. Lyons, World War I: A Short History (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1994).

Laurence Lafore: The Long Fuse: An Interpretation of the Origins of World War I (Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1971).

Please note that the topics announced for each day are simply that, general topic areas taken from the chapter headings in the text. What we will actually do on any particular day within that topic limitation depends on developments in my mind and in yours. What could happen is that I will decide to give a lecture, show a documentary, some slides, play some music, or ask you to discuss the assigned reading - almost anything within the broad topical limitation. There will be two examinations, a Midterm Exam of the essay variety and a Final Exam more or less in the same format. In addition there are two required book reviews, one based on Lafore' The Long Fuse, a classic in history if there ever was one. More details will follow. You are expected to attend class, participate in discussion and see all the scheduled videos and movies. The contents of videos are simply another form of knowledge like the content of lectures and books. So it goes without saying that exams should reflect this fact.

Grades will be determined roughly by assigning 30% to Midterm, 30% to Final, 30% to book reviews and 10% to class parti-cipation.

Here are some books-some of them classics-on World War I which I found in my little library. This means that I bought them recently or a long time ago, and that I am reading them now, have read them at some point, or at least know what is in them.
